The most common problem with electric golf carts is how to start them. The battery powers the motor of the carriage. For the golf cart to move, the battery needs to be recharged. If you keep charging the battery without regular maintenance, eventually it won't recharge. If the golf cart's battery is to be fully charged, the cable needs to be cleaned and checked for wear. Battery Chargers should not be used to charge low-acid or leaky batteries. Do you know how to check the golf cart battery charger?

Step 1

Turn on the battery charger and see if the battery is charged. You can check the power being generated by the battery charger by connecting the voltmeter to the charger's negative and positive electrode clamps. The voltmeter has a pointer that moves from left to right to show the number of amperes present. Straight to the left means no power or amps, straight to the right means the battery is fully charged, max amps. A golf cart battery charger can record up to 36 amperes on a voltmeter.

Step 2

Look at the cable on the battery charger. Transfer the ignition device to the auxiliary ignition device. If the charger is not turned on, there is a problem connecting the charger to the battery.

Step 3

Check the battery charger transformer by listening to the hum. Also, check that the AC power cord is plugged into the working outlet. If the battery has a current, then you should be able to hear the hum of the transformer.

Step 4

Follow the wiring of the battery charger. There is a wiring diagram for a golf cart in the owner's manual. A continuous connection from the battery charger to the battery is required to keep the power running. Check battery terminals for wear, breakage and corrosion.

Step 5

Look for the ground wire on the battery charger. It will be a wire from the charger and connected to the golf cart within the metal frame of the engine housing. The ground wire was disconnected, causing the battery charger to fail to charge.

Step 6

Find the charger fuse on the maintenance panel of the golf cart's rear fender. If the battery charger fuse blows, the battery will not be able to charge.

Step 7

Remove the cover from the battery terminal. If the liquid is gray or brown, the battery needs to be replaced and will not charge.
Overheating causes battery charger to fail. Make sure the battery charger is free of dirt and debris. Any type of corrosion can lead to overheating.
